As a Music and Art Therapist, you will be responsible for providing direct therapy services to participants, utilizing music and art therapy techniques. The participants may or may not have a primary diagnosis of mental illness but could benefit from therapy to maintain, improve, or prevent regression of their condition. Your role will focus on assisting participants in the acquisition, retention, or improvement of skills necessary for them to live and work in the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment and Treatment Planning:
- Conduct initial assessments to evaluate participants’ needs, strengths, and goals.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and participant preferences.
- Therapeutic Interventions:
- Provide music and art therapy sessions to participants, incorporating a variety of creative techniques and activities.
- Utilize music and art as mediums for self-expression, emotional processing, and skill development.
- Progress Monitoring and Documentation:
- Regularly monitor participants’ progress during therapy sessions and adjust treatment plans as needed.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of participant sessions, progress notes, and treatment goals.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure holistic care and continuity of services.
- Communicate effectively with participants, their families, and caregivers to provide support and education about therapy goals and progress.
- Continuing Education and Professional Development:
- Stay informed about current research, best practices, and trends in music and art therapy.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance therapeutic skills and knowledge.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Therapy, Art Therapy, or a related field.
- Certification and/or licensure as a Music Therapist (MT-BC) or Art Therapist (ATR) preferred.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals with mental health diagnoses, developmental disabilities, or neurological conditions.
- Proficiency in a variety of music and art therapy techniques, methods, and interventions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with participants and their support networks.
- Commitment to ethical practice, cultural competence, and client-centered care.
Note: To provide Equine Assisted Therapy, individuals must have one of the following certifications:
- Certified by the American Hippotherapy Certification Board;
- Certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International;
- Certified by the Council for Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship; or
- Other ODP-approved certification board.
Applicants who meet the qualifications for Equine Assisted Therapy certification are encouraged to apply, as additional training and certification in Music Therapy or Art Therapy can complement the delivery of comprehensive therapeutic services.
